Cherry Blossom Sessions!
While the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, I took a few of my clients out (at different times) and took some photographs.
Don’t miss out next year!

Fairfax (VA) - Photographer Hyon Smith was awarded three Accolades of Excellence for prints entered in the prestigious 2010 Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 16×20 Print Competition. The Print Competition is a part of the annual WPPI Conference held in Las Vegas, NV. With members all over the world, WPPI is the premier association for photographers in the wedding industry.
Over 3,500 submissions were entered in this year’s 16×20 Print Competition. Each print was judged and scored by a panel of leading photographers in the wedding industry. The average of their respective marks was assigned as a print’s final score.
2010 marked the first time Hyon submitted photos to the competition, and his signature style received high marks in the Photojournalism category of the contest.
“Ladies’ Man”
Some moments require quick shooting and can never be staged. This little ring bearer was the star of a very special and fun wedding photograph.
“Untitled”
This special moment between the groom and his grandfather was quietly captured from the sidelines. A moving example of the intersection between photojournalism and wedding photography.
“Untitled”
This photograph showcases emotion, utilizes available light, and captures the moment.

We had the pleasure of shooting Narie and Michael’s wedding a few years ago, and as a result, were doubly pleased to take pictures of their baby boy Jackson this past weekend.
Infant sessions are special shoots that document fleeting moments in a child’s life, and it was a privilege to capture the emotion between Jackson and his parents.
With equipment in tow, we traveled to Narie and Michael’s lovely new home to meet and photograph Jackson. He was adorable and did not disappoint.

The little guy was quite cooperative and seemed to even like the camera.

Even at a mere 3 months, we saw Jackson’s playful nature emerge.

At 3 months, pudgy arms and fingers are at the peak of cuteness.

Jackson did great throughout the shoot.

Mom and Dad’s love for Jackson was evident throughout the session.

Studio portraits were also taken on location to complete the session.

Jackson signalling that he’s tired from all his modeling.

Taking a break
All in all, it was a great session, and congratulations again to Narie and Michael on their first child. We look forward to seeing more of Jackson in the future!

Andrew and Darshini stopped by yesterday for a photoshoot to make some birth announcement cards for their new baby boy. Since they’re taking a trip to New York to visit family, I thought I’d post a little something to help introduce everyone (especially family) to Aidan Rhim, the couple’s new born, and Anika Rhim, his older sister.

A few years ago, while Christie and Jeff were getting engaged, Christie referred her sister, Cindy, and her sister’s husband, Matt, to us so we could photograph their (Cindy & Matt’s) new addition, Mackenzie, with the entire Leary family. Now, five years later, both sisters have new additions (once again), and we decided to photograph all of them together. Meet Mackenzie’s new little brother, Jackson, and her new baby cousin, Brady!

I and everyone else at Hyon Smith Photography would like to wish you and your families and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for all our families and friends who continued to support and share the good times with us in 2009. I look forward to the new year with you all. Please enjoy the holiday break and have a safe one too (especially from the snow!). I love you all!

Let’s start the new year the cool way with our first workshop of 2010. Please RSVP as soon as possible. Only a maximum of 5-6 attendees are allowed. I believe keeping it at a small number of friends allows more one-on-one time and guidance as well as a more hands-on experience. I hope you can join us!

A few days ago, Brooke and Michael brought their son Landon and daughter Emerson for some family portraits. I loved showing off Landon’s million-dollar locks! While we were inside, I used studio lighting, but once we got outside, I only had to use natural lighting. Check out the work for yourselves:

The last seminar I held was especially fun since it was the first snow of the season. I taught how to photograph just about anywhere, as you can see with the snowball fights below! Emily is part of the “Big Sister” program and brought two of her little sisters with her, as well. They were both a lot fun. A big thank you to all the models and everyone who helped make it a success! It was nice having a lot of great, talented, and determined photographers show up!
