Engagement shoots are a special way for a couple to mark their upcoming wedding.
Each couple is different, and a location shoot is a great way to express and capture that unique flavor.
Lisa and Donghwa seemed right at home in the Big Apple. They did justice to the old school flavor of New York City while keeping it fresh and modern with their sense of style. Their fun and light nature was a pleasure to work with and comes through in the latest photo set.

Every story has a beginning…

And a middle…

But this story is only just beginning.
Congratulations Lisa & Donghwa!

A few months ago, Janxon and his cousin Isabella (with parents in tow) visited the studio for some pictures.

Janxson loved the camera. And the camera loved him back.

Mom and Dad did alright as well.

Though she required some coaxing, Isabella would not be outdone.

Photographing children and families at various stages is always a pleasure.
Book your session today and create lasting family memories.

A few months back, we had the pleasure of shooting Adrienne and Jason’s wedding at the Inn at Little Washington.
The Inn at Little Washington is not located in Washington, DC but about an hour out in a town called Washington, VA. Confused? Don’t be. Despite being a short trek from DC (which really only adds to its charm), it regularly tops annual lists of best restaurants in the DC area. Their venue for weddings is quaint and has amazing views.

The day had a very classy and intimate feel.

Photographers get younger and younger.

It was an emotion-filled day.

Our friends at the Inn at Little Washington did not disappoint.

With true DC flair and elegance, the wedding cake was decorated in-house with fresh cherry blossoms.

Congratulations Adrienne and Jason!

Two Seater
Our good friends Michelle and Adam recently tied the knot on the island of Jamaica. While location shoots are always fun, a destination wedding provides a great opportunity to capture special images of a special day.

Walk Towards the Light
Infrared photography can turn an ordinary scene into a unique dreamy look. This image is a slightly different composition from the infrared images that we typically shoot, but it was intended to emphasize the contrast between darkness and light.

Groom-Tan-Laundry
An editorial style also provides a different flavor for a bride and groom’s memories of their wedding. Versatility and quick thinking are two keys to successful destination wedding photography.

Bridge of No Return
Beautiful weather, amazing backdrops, and friendly people made this trip to Jamaica a great experience. Many photographers in the wedding industry consider destination weddings to be a perk to the job, but to shoot a destination wedding the right way requires a lot of energy and work. Ya mon!
We look forward to next month’s destination shoot in St. Thomas!

While the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, I took a few of my clients out (at different times) and took some photographs.
Don’t miss out next year!

Fairfax (VA) - Photographer Hyon Smith was awarded three Accolades of Excellence for prints entered in the prestigious 2010 Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 16×20 Print Competition. The Print Competition is a part of the annual WPPI Conference held in Las Vegas, NV. With members all over the world, WPPI is the premier association for photographers in the wedding industry.
Over 3,500 submissions were entered in this year’s 16×20 Print Competition. Each print was judged and scored by a panel of leading photographers in the wedding industry. The average of their respective marks was assigned as a print’s final score.
2010 marked the first time Hyon submitted photos to the competition, and his signature style received high marks in the Photojournalism category of the contest.

“Ladies’ Man”
Some moments require quick shooting and can never be staged. This little ring bearer was the star of a very special and fun wedding photograph.

“Untitled”
This special moment between the groom and his grandfather was quietly captured from the sidelines. A moving example of the intersection between photojournalism and wedding photography.
“Untitled”
This photograph showcases emotion, utilizes available light, and captures the moment.

Jen and Scott had a beautiful, beautiful wedding in the Bahamas. They invited their close friends (hokies-include) and family! I made a little semi-comic for the occasion. Congratulations to Jen and Scott and tune in next week for more photos!

A little while ago, I went out to D.C. with Amy and Edward for a little photo shoot. It was tons of fun, and the time of day just seemed perfect. Everything came out great! The colors were vibrant and Amy and Edward were so great with posing. Here are some photos from the shoot.
